Taiwan on Two Wheels

by Mr Mike

No, I didn’t suddenly teleport to Taiwan, although that would be pretty awesome if I figured out how to!

Wait.  Hold up.  Let me try something!

Well, you guessed it, I’m still in Korea.  Apparently the untranslatable Korean on my washing machine doesn’t really mean “wormhole.”

Well anyway, I stumbled across this trip around Taiwan.  Thomas Di Fonzo decided to tour Taiwan on an 11 day bike trip covering roughly 800 miles around the island of Taiwan.  It sounds like a fantastic adventure and just might be how I explore Taiwan (especially if I haven’t gotten my teleportation skills perfected).

I’ll probably pack a little heavier than him and definitely bring my DSLR.  Gonna have to work on my biking endurance if I wanna churn out 80 miles a day too.  I hope you enjoy his travel report as much as I did!

Have you ever done a bike excursion?  How did it compare to seeing an area on foot?

I did a 3 day camping trip in the Berkshires. It was fun and an incredible workout. Hopefully Taiwan will be less hilly. Though on my trip the organizers carried our camping gear around with us and planned the whole trip out. You’ll have an extra challenge of biking with all your gear. I recommend planning he trip out as much as possible, working in the possibility of doing 50 miles per day since 80 is ambitious for 11 days straight!

I should add it was a three day biking trip where we camped instead of staying at inns.

Yeah staying in inns/hostels would be my preferred choice and definitely cut down on gear.

That sounds like a sweet trip Spence! When I get back to the states we’ll have to plan something together.

Thr trip is at least a year away so I’ve got some time to build my endurance and plan it out. Might be nice to have something driving my exercise regimen again.

Thanks Lee! Yangmingshan looks beautiful and I think it will certainly be part of my eventual Taiwan itinerary.

I biked across the US via the TransAmerica Trail last summer. 4,000+ miles took about 2.5 months. Definitely the best trip of my life so far, and one that has inspired me to travel as many places by bike as possible! Soon I’ll be teaching in Ulsan with EPIK, and I plan to do a lot of riding around the country while I’m there. Good luck with your Taiwan trip prep!

Thanks Magyarn! That sounds like a stellar trip across the US.

You are gonna have a blast with EPIK. Its one of the best teaching programs here. I haven’t been to Ulsan yet but its a beach town near Busan (a great city!)

My Taiwan trip went onto the back burner as I get ready for Vietnam & Cambodia (leaving tonight!) and return home for my next vacation. But I am buying a bike from a friend at the end of the summer and will begin training!

Awesome! Can’t wait to hear about your time in Vietnam and Cambodia!

Mike, not sure if you remember me from the Seoraksan trip with SHG last week, but I was there! I was just surfing around on Facebook/Wordpress and restumbled upon your blog/this post, which I commented on awhile ago before we even met! Small world! Anyway…that’s all haha

Mr Mike October 27, 2014 - 8:18 pm

Small world indeed Nate! Glad you made the connection I didn’t realize it was you when I saw you over the weekend.

Hope you are having a blast with EPIK and we run into each other again soon.
