Getting ready for an escape to a sunny island? This is everything you should have on your planning and packing list.
There’s nothing like a trip to an island destination. Most people automatically think of islands as hot, tropical destinations. But there are many kinds of islands in the world, and you’ll need to prepare differently according to what each destination offers. I’ve compiled a list of planning and packing necessities for both warm and cold island destinations so that you have everything you need no matter where you decide to go.

General Planning and Packing Advice
There are a few things that you should know about island travel, whatever your destination.
Planning Ahead
- You may need to hire a private plane to reach more remote and inaccessible destinations. If the destination is especially remote, you may need to take several different kinds of transport.
- Book a car service to the airport to make your life easier. You don’t need the extra stress of driving yourself and then worrying about where your car is parked for your whole vacation.
- Plan check-ins with friends or family at home so that someone always knows exactly where you are and what’s going on.
- Always research your destination beforehand to know what activities you like to do or places you want to see.
- Learn basic phrases in the local language, carry a phrase book, or download a translator app.
- Ask your accommodation if there are any areas you should avoid or places that the locals highly recommend.
- Research cuisine and make sure that you can locate food you’ll enjoy if the local cuisine isn’t really up your alley.
- Make any medical appointments you may need well before your departure date. This applies mostly if you’re visiting areas with malaria or other health issues.
Must-Have Items for Every Trip
- Always have physical and digital copies of your travel documents and the originals, too — just to be safe.
- Don’t forget your tech! Pack your phone and charger, computer or tablet and charger, camera and charger, plug adapters if needed, and cables for downloads and exchanges.
- Walking shoes are always a plus — or even a complete necessity, depending on how rough or cold the terrain is, and how active you are when you’re on vacation.
- Always include a dry bag in your luggage — a bag lined with waterproof material. Whether you’re going to a hot or cold island destination, there will be some important things you want to keep safe when you’re out exploring.
- You always need sunblock, whether in the tropics or in freezing Greenland. Always wear it, especially on your face.
- Always pack a full supply of any prescription medications and ensure you can reach your doctor if you need an emergency prescription emailed to you.
- Don’t worry about packing things like towels, as your accommodation will (in most cases) have these available. This will save lots of space in your suitcase.
Packing for Warm Destinations
This is what to pack if you’re heading to a tropical island destination.
- Shoes: Bring one pair of hiking or walking boots, one pair of comfortable walking shoes like trainers, one pair of comfortable sandals, and one pair of formal or “fancy” shoes for any important occasion.
- Clothing: Pack light, natural, and breathable fabrics (linen, cotton, hemp, etc.), as they are moisture-wicking and help regulate body temperature. Pack one cold-weather outfit, just in case. A sun hat is essential.
- Swim and undergarments: 2–3 swim options, enough underwear for every day, plus ¼ days’ worth of spares.
- Toiletries: Include baby powder for sand removal and minimizing friction, and insect repellent because you might not get any peace if you don’t! Don’t forget sunblock of at least SPF 50 for the face and body — reef-safe is best if you can get it. Use a deeply hydrating body cream and a light face cream.
- Accessories: Don’t forget sunglasses! Ensure that they are polarised to protect your eyes from the bright sunlight and reflections on the beach.
Packing for Cold Destinations
These are the items you’ll need specifically for cold destinations.
- Shoes: Include one pair of hiking or walking boots. These should be snow- and water-resistant if necessary. Also, include comfortable walking shoes and ensure they’re properly lined. Include a pair of nice boots or formal shoes for dinners.
- Clothing: Layering is key, and so is wearing the right fabrics. You need heat-saving and thermal garments. Pack one windproof and waterproof layer (coat and pants) and then a selection of heat-retaining underlayers, from long johns to long sleeves, sweaters, and knits. Be sure to include clothing that is suitable for indoors, as there will likely be heating wherever you go. Beanies, waterproof gloves, scarves, and balaclava are essential, too.
- Toiletries: As above, except insect repellant. Body cream as per usual, but include thick, deeply hydrating creams for your face, hands, and feet to protect your skin against the cold.
- Undergarments: Thermals (this applies to socks, too — make sure you bring plenty) and one swimsuit for indoor pools or hot springs. Otherwise, pack as mentioned above.
- Accessories: The same as above; you may need to include goggles depending on your activities and whether there will be snow at your destination.
Island Life Is The Good Life
