From fjords to formal nights: a complete packing list for your Alaskan cruise

by Mike Still

When cruising to Alaska, it is possible to experience four different seasons in a day. Apart from these ever changing weather patterns, the terrain is also wild and rugged which makes deciding on what to stash in your suitcase a bit of a logistical challenge.

Alaska is different from other cruise destinations like the Caribbean, the Mediterranean or Asia, therefore what you will want to pack will require careful planning.

This blog will share some insider knowledge with you to help you pack for your dream trip like a pro and explain the importance of each item and what not to bring on the ship.

We will also delve into the best options for dressing up for an occasion, whether it is kayaking the fjords or dining elegantly for a formal night with the Captain and crew.

Essential documents

For your cruise to Alaska carry your ID, passport(check with your cruise operator if you need to carry one), credit cards and some hard cash to pay for tips and purchasing souvenirs.

Make electronic copies of all your documents like Alaska cruise reservations, flight tickets, travel insurance, any hotel bookings for before and after the cruise and shore excursion details.

Pack plenty of thin layers

In order to save room in your suitcase to achieve more flexibility, it is essential to pack lots of thin layers. This will allow you to add a layer with the change of weather in case the mercury dips as your cruise progresses.

For instance, if you sail from Vancouver you can start with a comfortable light-weight short-sleeve jacket and add a cardigan for warmth and top it with a coat. In case you feel warm, you can then start shedding whatever you don’t need to make yourself feel more comfortable.

Layering is also important as it allows you to adjust your body temperatures rapidly. By adding or removing layers you will be able to adapt to changing weather conditions and make your cruise more enjoyable.

Prepare for wet weather conditions

Carry a pair of quick-drying trousers and wear good moisture wicking socks to tackle any wet weather conditions you may encounter on the trip. Add a pair of boots or comfortable hiking shoes to combat the uneven terrain on your shore excursions.

Add a pair of tech-friendly gloves and a warm hat in case you want to watch the majestic glaciers from the deck of your ship on an early morning and snap the perfect shot.

While July and August are the best months to cruise in Alaska, they also happen to be the wettest. When whale watching or trekking in icy conditions, consider a rain trench to experience things in comfort.

Accessories

Besides the essential clothes and footwear, do not forget some of these accessories for your Alaska cruise trip. A waterproof daypack should be on the top of your packing list. You will need a place to keep valuables and other things like gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses for a busy day on shore.

Binoculars should be of particular interest to those interested in animals and birdwatching. This will allow you to see the wildlife of the state from close quarters. A camera with zoom lens is also highly recommended to take high quality pictures. Remember to carry portable chargers and enough memory cards for the scores of photo opportunities you may get on the trip.

A reusable water bottle with a secure lid should be a non-negotiable item on your packing list. Not only does it eliminate risk of spillage, it acts as a gym buddy and handy for quenching thirst on shore excursions. Moreover, it is eco-friendly which is a great way to align with the beauty of Alaska.

Cruise wear and themed attire

Outside of what you will wear on your shore excursions, you will need to pack for the time on your cruise ship. This may include a swimsuit, clothes for formal wear and comfortable casual clothes when lounging in your stateroom.

Rotating three or four outfits at dinner can be a nice way to ensure that you wear presentable clothes, while at the same time keep your suitcase light.

In some cruises, there is a dress code for dinner in the main restaurant for which cruise guests have to dress accordingly. Elsewhere women need to wear a smart dress and men can dress in pants with a short-sleeve shirt. As far as footwear is concerned, flip flops are a big no-no during evenings on the ship.

Medications

Make sure to carry your prescription as well as first-aid medications in a travel-size pill sorter and keep it in your carry bag to use when needed. Also any over the counter medicines should also be kept where easily accessible.

Though it is possible to purchase basic medicines like antibiotic ointments and antacids and the like on the ship itself, be prepared to pay much more than you would do on land.

What not to pack for a cruise

Knowing what to leave behind is just as important as knowing what to pack for your Alaskan cruise, as over packing can lead to a cumbersome experience.

Some of the things you can safely leave behind are:

  • Excessive toiletries
  • Towels
  • Hair dryer
  • Non-permitted items in the ship’s list
  • Excessive formal wear
  • Trekking poles

Being selective on what to pack will make your Alaska cruise stress-free, more enjoyable and give you that extra space for souvenirs and exploration.

Thanks for this helpful packing guide for an Alaskan cruise! The emphasis on layering for fluctuating temperatures is crucial, as well as the reminder to pack for both adventure and formal events. Accessories like binoculars for wildlife viewing and a waterproof daypack are great suggestions for making the most of the trip. It’s also great to keep practical items like medications, a reusable water bottle, and a camera handy for memorable moments. The tip to avoid packing flip-flops for dinner ensures a more polished look during evenings aboard.
