Muuido Island – The Perfect Getaway from Seoul

Muuido Island – The Perfect Getaway from Seoul

Muuido Island is so close to Seoul that you can see airplanes landing at Incheon International Airport from the beach.  Thankfully its also remote enough that the hustle and bustle of the city disappears along with the city lights and thankfully some pollution too.  Do yourself a favor and stay overnight in one of the Hanagae beach pensions or bring a tent and camp out on Muuido’s fine sand.

Getting to Muuido Beach

1) Head to Incheon Airport (Airport buses are the most convenient)
2) Take Bus 222 from the 3rd floor of Incheon Airport
3) Get off ~2 stops later at the Muuido Ferry (3800won for a round trip ticket)
4) Take the local Muuido bus to its 2nd stop – Muuido Beach!

Admission to Hanagae Beach is ~2,000won for adults
Beach cottages can be rent for as low as 40,000won and can easily fit 4 adults.

Ronda and I were happy to join our friends for a quick getaway to Muuido.  The bus to a bus to a ferry to a bus took us about 3 hours door to door but was well worth the trip!  We brought a grill and everyone enjoyed a potluck style BBQ spending most of the day relaxing in the sun and playing in the water.

Hanagae beach is incredibly shallow and goes on forever.  At low-tide you can literally walk out for miles and still only be knee deep!  Rumor has it you can walk to the next island but we weren’t that brave.  While you enjoy the water dozens of Koreans will be wading through low-tide searching for clams and other mollusks to add to their supper.

One of my favorite parts of Muuido was the sunset; this western facing beach fills up with a fabulous orange blow and shouldn’t be missed!  Whether you’re looking for a party or a relaxing day at the beach Muuido is the right choice for you.Muuido Sunset Panorama 6-001

If you’re up for a little more excitement rent a quad or zip line over the sand.  Both are family friendly and you’ll see people zipping along at all hours of the day.

This looks like a great getaway! I haven’t heard of Muuido Island before, just mainly the popular ones (Jeju, Ulluengdo, Goje) but this does look stunning – and maybe less crowded than some of the other ones! I’ll be sure to pass this along to my friends so they can check it out! Thanks for sharing – that sunset is gorgeous!

Its certainly not as mainstream as the islands you talked about but Korea has so many other awesome places. I think I’m going to do a “best islands of Korea” post soon to bring attention to some of the lesser known gems I’ve found

Cities are great cause they are usually so close to tons of other things. I find when I travel unless I’m meeting people I rarely stay in a city.

The Muuido island sounds like an ideal escape from the city. The fact that it is not very far from Seoul, yet far enough to afford the calm of being away from the concrete jungle is great. You really have some amazing shots of the sunset.

Hi Mike,

Absolutely beautiful! So cool to be close to a major city too. Quick island getaway. I am a sucker for islands. I dig the remote nature of a place that may not be that remote, but which is still isolated from the rest of the country. The benefit of a large body of water 😉 Thanks for sharing the awesome sundown picture and this fabulous post 🙂
